"A Moveable Feast" recap: A Culinary Journey at The Rhum House Through Hemingway’s Favorite Flavors

In August, The Rhum House hosted a truly unforgettable event—a paired dinner aptly named "A Moveable Feast." Inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s extensive travels and culinary loves, this five-course dinner was a flavorful tribute to the iconic author’s favorite foods and drinks. Each course was a delicious nod to Hemingway’s adventures, spanning from the Florida Keys to Africa.

This unique event not only paid homage to Hemingway’s adventurous palate but also showcased the exquisite Pilar Rum, crafted by Hemingway Rum Company. As special guests, the team from Hemingway Rum Company joined us to share the story behind their signature rums, enhancing the evening with their deep connection to Hemingway’s legacy.

Paired with exquisite cocktails, wines and Pilar Rum, this evening was a remarkable gastronomic journey. Here’s an inside look at what the evening held.

Course 1: Conch Salad with Cachucha Pepper and Coconut Leche de Tigre

Our culinary adventure began close to home, with a vibrant dish from the Florida Keys. The Conch Salad was an explosion of tropical flavors, complemented by the Cachucha pepper's mild heat and the refreshing Coconut Leche de Tigre. This dish was paired with a classic Floridita Daiquiri using Pilar Blonde, setting the stage for an evening of diverse flavors.

Course 2: Poached Pear and Duck Breast with Pear and Red Wine Reduction and Summer Truffles

Next, we traveled to France with a rich and indulgent dish featuring poached pear and duck breast. The pear and red wine reduction was elevated by the addition of luxurious summer truffles, creating a symphony of flavors on the palate. This course was paired with a Chablis perfectly harmonizing with the savory and sweet notes of the dish.

Course 3: Nigerian Tiger Prawn with Nigerian Pepper Sauce and Cassava Chips

The journey continued to Africa with a vibrant Nigerian tiger prawn dish. The prawns were perfectly cooked and generously spiced with Nigerian pepper sauce, offering a delightful kick. The cassava chips added a satisfying crunch. Paired with a cocktail called the "Angry Pelican" (made with Pilar Sherry Cask) it was definitely an adventurous course!

Course 4: Black Ibérico Presa Steak with Galician Potato Stack and Madeira Cream Espuma

From the heart of Spain came a classic, sophisticated course: Ibérico Pork. This perfectly cooked pork was served with a Galician potato stack and a luscious Madeira Cream Espuma. The dish was paired with a Spanish Rioja which complemented the richness of the pork and the creamy Madeira sauce.

Dessert: Paris-Brest with Hemingway Twist

We concluded our feast with a Paris-Brest, a dessert inspired by Hemingway’s love for Paris. This classic pastry was given a unique twist, incorporating a surprise of rum-soaked raisins. The dessert was paired with a "Parisian Rum Affair" cocktail that blended Hemingway Rye, Pilar Sherry Cask, and Pilar Dark into the perfect end to a spectacular meal.

Rum Tasting and Raffle Fun

Adding an extra layer of excitement, the evening featured a rum tasting with Pilar Rum. Guests had the chance to sample each of their rums, and win bottles of Pilar Rum in a raffle held between courses, adding a fun and interactive element to the dinner.
