Planning a tropical escape to the Florida Keys? Marathon is the perfect mix of laid-back island vibes, natural beauty, and old-school Florida charm in a perfect central location. But before you book your slice of paradise, here’s everything you need to know to plan your trip right.

Getting to Marathon, FL
By Air:
Key West International Airport (EYW) – Just about 50 miles south (roughly an hour’s drive).
Miami International Airport (MIA) – About 110 miles north (~2.5–3 hours depending on traffic).
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Intl (FLL) – Around 145 miles away (~3.5 hours).
Flying into Miami or Fort Lauderdale usually gives you more airline options (and often cheaper flights), while flying into Key West gets you closer to the action faster.
Getting Around:
Driving is your best bet – Renting a car is highly recommended so you can explore Marathon and the surrounding Keys at your own pace.
Shuttle services and taxis are available but limited. Ride-shares like Uber operate in the area, but with less frequency.
Boaters, welcome! Marathon is a boater’s dream with a public boat ramp and many restaurants that are accessible by boat.

Best Time to Visit
March to May – Arguably the best time! Warm, sunny weather and fewer crowds.
October to early December – Ideal for those looking for peace, great temps, and off-season deals.
June to September – Hotter, with a higher chance of rain and tropical weather, but also great for fishing and water activities (just plan for afternoon storms). Keep in mind that many restaurants and businesses in Marathon close for the month of September!
A Note About Sargassum Seaweed
During the warmer months (typically April through October), you might notice sargassum seaweed washing up on the Keys shoreline. It’s a natural occurrence that supports marine life, but when it piles up onshore, it can cause odor and take away from those dreamy beach views.
Here’s the good news:
It’s seasonal and doesn’t affect all areas equally—our team at Grassy Flats monitors conditions daily and keeps the shoreline as guest-ready as possible.
If it does roll in, there are plenty of offshore excursions (like snorkeling, sandbar hopping, or fishing) where the water is crystal clear and sargassum-free.
Want to check ahead? Give us a call or look up local updates—we’re happy to help you time your visit.
