How Do You Plan a Florida Keys Bachelor or Bachelorette Weekend?
BY RYAN GOLOVERSIC, WITH MATT SEXTON, OWNER OF GRASSY FLATS RESORT AND BEACH CLUB
Somebody in your group got handed this job. It probably wasn’t a fair process and now you are the one holding twenty people, four calendars, and a group chat full of opinions. Don’t worry, we got it.
Let's address the elephant in the room. Most people planning a Keys party weekend default to Key West because it is the name everybody knows, and then they spend the whole trip driving. That is not a knock on Key West. It is a great town and it does exactly what it says it does. But if the weekend you are picturing has boats and water and everybody actually together, you are looking at the middle keys.
This is the planning guide. Where to base it, how many nights, when to book, what moves the cost, how to split the bill without anybody getting weird about it, and what a real three night weekend looks like hour by hour. The activity list is on the sister page. This one is the logistics.
Matt Sexton owns Grassy Flats, runs charters, and has been building these weekends out of Marathon for twenty years.

Where should you base a Florida Keys bachelor or bachelorette weekend?
Three real options.
Base in the middle and you can still have your Key West night. Base in Key West and you cannot really have the water days.
How far are the Florida Keys from Miami?
Marathon is about 108 miles down US 1, two and a half hours in normal traffic. Islamorada is around ninety minutes. Key West is roughly four hours.
Do not treat the drive as travel time you have to absorb. Once you clear Homestead it turns into the best part of Friday. Water on both sides, bridges the whole way, somebody in the back seat with a cooler and control of the music. Groups that fly into Miami and drive down together will tell you the weekend started somewhere around mile marker 90.
Should the group fly or drive?
Drive if anybody is coming from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, or Palm Beach.
Fly into Miami and drive down if the group is scattered around the country. Rent one van instead of six cars and put the cooler in it.
Fly into Marathon if the budget allows it. The regional airport takes commuter flights from Miami and private jets, and it is ten minutes from the property. People land at two and have a drink in their hand by three.
How many nights do you need?
Three.
Two nights gets you one dinner and one thing on the water and then you are driving home. It works if you pick the one thing the group actually came for and put everything behind it.
Three is where it turns into a trip. A water day, a night out, and a day in the middle with nothing scheduled.
Four if anybody can get the extra day off. Matt had a guest named Henry who tacked on a night at the end because he had already done what he came for and did not feel like leaving. Sat up with the crew working through a bottle of bourbon. That happens more than you would think.

What is the best time of year for a Florida Keys bachelorette party?
How far ahead should you book?
Six months for March through May. Three months for summer. About six weeks in the fall shoulder.
Book the rooms and the boat in the same conversation. Groups that lock rooms in October and go looking for a charter in February end up on whatever boat is left.
Can you book a whole resort for a wedding party?
Thirty eight units. Run your headcount against that number.
A small wedding party takes a real chunk of the property. A big one starts looking at all of it. Every room has at least a partial ocean view, and the private beach, pool, and sauna come with the place.
Ask about a partial or full buyout early, because the answer depends entirely on your dates and season fills.

Who handles the planning after you book?
The front desk calls you within three days of booking. They call to ask what you are actually trying to do while you are here, which for a group organizer is the first time all month somebody has asked a useful question.
Then the weekend gets built backward off that answer. Boats, lessons, dinners, aqua park sessions, the bus night.
Matt does this himself for groups, and he does not run it off a package sheet. Sixteen people came down recently for a seventieth birthday. Splitting them across our own boats would have made a mediocre day, so he put all sixteen on a custom forty plus foot catamaran instead and sent them out for a private snorkel and sandbar run. They came back calling it the game changer of the trip. That is the difference between calling a small property and filling out a group form at a chain.
What drives the cost of a Florida Keys wedding party weekend?
Five things move the number.
Room nights and how many rooms. Charter days, which is the biggest single line for a fishing crew. Lessons, priced per person, so ten people costs what ten people costs. Whether you bus out for a night. Private dinners and wine dinners.
Groups get built rather than packaged here, so the number follows the plan. Call with a headcount and dates and you get a real answer.
The cheapest lever nobody uses is the market. Breakfast for twenty out of a market instead of a restaurant, lunch off the boat, and the food line comes down hard without anybody eating badly.
How do you split the bill for a group?
Decide this before anybody arrives. Every group that fights about money on day three is a group that did not decide on day zero.
What usually works. Rooms go on individual cards at booking. The organizer collects for activities up front, because a charter deposit is one payment and not twelve. Group dinners split evenly and the two people who only had a salad get over it. Bus night is a flat per head.
The front desk can put group activities on one folio, so you are not chasing Venmo requests from a boat.
Do you need a rental car?
For a group staying on one property with the food, boats, and watersports on site, no.
Keep one car or a van for grocery runs and airport pickups. Get a driver or a bus for any night out, because nobody should be running US 1 late. Bikes come with the stay if somebody wants to see the neighborhood.
How do you handle the one big night out?
Get a bus and a driver. We have the guy and we set the whole thing up. We ran one for the butcher's fortieth.
Islamorada. Twenty five minutes north. Hog Heaven, the Whistle Stop, a run of roadside dive bars. Leave at seven thirty, home by one, functional in the morning.
Key West. An hour and twenty each way. Matt's formula has not changed in twenty years. Leave with a cooler on board and a buzz already going. Get there for sunset and hit Mallory Square for the street performers and the drop. Find dinner. Two or three bars on Duval, Sloppy Joe's for the Hemingway of it. Rolling home by 11:30 or midnight.
Pick Islamorada if there is a boat booked for the next morning. Pick Key West if Sunday is a pool day.

What does a three night Florida Keys wedding party weekend look like?
What does a two night version look like?
Friday arrival, one water day, one real dinner, Sunday morning home.
Pick the single thing the group came for and build around it. A charter with hook and cook that night, or a sandbar day and a wine dinner. Skip the bus night. A two night trip cannot absorb a Key West hangover.
Short trips work when you go deep on one thing and fall apart when you try to sample everything.
What happens if the wind blows out the boat day?
You go do something better, which is the whole advantage of a property where six activities live in one place.
Wind is what kiting and wing foiling need, so a blown out fishing morning is a good kite morning. The cable wake park and the aqua park run behind the mangroves no matter what the weather does. Offshore fishing slides to the next morning.
Groups that book a room in one place and vendors all over town lose the day. Groups that book it all in one place change the plan at breakfast.

What if there is a storm in the forecast?
September through November is the cheapest and quietest stretch of the year and there is a reason for that.
Buy travel insurance for fall dates, especially with deposits on boats and twenty people involved. Watch the forecast at seven days and again at three. Ask the front desk directly about the cancellation and rebooking policy for your dates before you put money down, because the answer depends on how you booked.
Most fall weekends go off without anything happening and the group has the place to itself.
What should the group pack?
Reef safe sunscreen, more than you think. A long sleeve sun shirt, because eight hours on a boat is a lot of sun. Polarized sunglasses on a strap. A hat you do not mind losing to the water.
Two pairs of shoes you do not care about. Something to wear to a real dinner, since the Rhum House is a room people dress for. A dry bag for phones on the sandbar.
Nobody needs a wetsuit. The water runs warm year round.
Who should not book this weekend?
Worth saying out loud so nobody wastes money.
If the plan is clubs, bottle service, and a strip club, that is Miami or Key West. They do it well and we have none of it.
If the group wants to sleep until noon and drink from noon until two in the morning for three straight days, base in Key West. Everything here starts early and the property is quiet by nine.
If somebody has to be talked into a boat or a board, they will have a slower weekend than everybody else. They will also have a sauna, a pool, a roof at five, and the best sandwich in Marathon.

How do you actually book it?
Call. Groups do not book well through a form.
Rooms, boats, buses, dinners, and the aqua park all sit on different calendars and twenty people need one person holding it. Send a headcount, your dates, and which half of the group wants to fish.
Then go read the full list of bachelor and bachelorette party ideas and pick what the weekend gets built around. Our full guide to planning a Florida Keys trip covers the rest of the chain if you are adding days on either end.
